Bertolt Brecht vor dem Ausschuss für un-amerikanische Tätigkeit

[English description further down.] Nicht nur die Geschwister Eisler, auch Bertolt Brecht musste im Oktober 1947 vor dem »Ausschuss für unamerikanische Tätigkeit« (House Committee on Un-American Activities) Rede und Antwort stehen, der im Zuge der ersten Welle der Kommunistenhatz nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg in den USA erneut Wichtigkeit erlangte und eher einem propagandistischen Zweck diente, jedoch einige Prozesse gegen Exil-Kommunisten nach sich zog. Im Folgenden ist die Aufnahme des Verhörs von Bertolt Brecht dokumentiert. Die HörerInnen erhalten dabei einerseits einen Eindruck von Brechts schlechtem, aber selbstbewusst vorgetragenem Englisch, für das er im amerikanischen Exil bald bekannt geworden war – zum anderen von der List, mit der Brecht die Fragen der Ausschuss-Mitglieder erwiderte. Interessant und absurd wird das Verhör vor allem an der Stelle, bei der sich Brecht mit den Vorgesetzten des Komittees darüber streitet, wie das Lehrstück »Die Maßnahme« zu interpretieren sei. Die Aufnahmen werden von Eric Bentley eingeleitet und kommentiert. Ein wichtiges und interessantes Dokument der Geschichte des Kommunismus und Antikommunismus sowie der Nachkriegsgeschichte.
Bertolt Brecht at the ‚House Committee on Un-American Activites‘ – A historical document, presented by Eric Bentley: Like Gerhart and Hanns Eisler, also Bertolt Brecht had to answer the questions of the Members of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA), that was built to opress communist tendencies, which apparently infiltred the american society. After the Second World War and in aftermath of the first big wave of pursuit against communists, the HCUA get propagandistic importance and prepared some legal proceedings against communist expatriates. Hereafter we offer the recording of the interrogation of Bertolt Brecht in octobre 1947. The listeners get an impression of Bertolt Brechts bad, but self-confident spoken English (the exile-friends of Brecht laugh about and learned to like that pronunciation) and also of the trick of Brecht’s answers. The most interesting and surely absurd part of the questioning begins, when Brecht and the questioners quarrel about the interpretation of Brecht’s play »Die Maßnahme« (The Decision). The original recordings are introduced and commented by Eric Bentley. An important and interesting document of communist and anti-communist history.
